IV therapy is having a cultural moment — drip bars in strip malls, celebrity hangover cures, "immune boost" menus at the airport. Some of it is real medicine. A lot of it is marketing. This guide is a clinician's take on what actually works, what does not, and how the Althera Drip Lab approaches IV nutrient therapy inside a real medical program.
What IV therapy actually is
IV therapy delivers fluids, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, or medications directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the gut. That matters because oral absorption of some nutrients is limited — especially when someone is depleted, inflamed, recovering, or under high physical demand. The IV route allows higher, more predictable plasma levels than a pill.
What the evidence supports
- Rehydration. IV fluids reliably correct dehydration from illness, heat, altitude, endurance events, or GI loss. This is not marketing — it is emergency medicine 101.
- Repletion of documented deficiencies. IV iron, B12, and magnesium have strong evidence when a deficiency is confirmed on labs.
- Peri-illness support. High-dose vitamin C, glutathione, and zinc protocols have reasonable data as adjuncts to recovery, especially alongside standard care.
- Recovery from heavy training or travel. Fluid + electrolytes + selected nutrients shorten the "wrecked" window after long flights, hard events, or big weeks. The mechanism is unglamorous: you were dehydrated and under-mineralized.
- NAD+ infusions. Early but promising evidence for energy, cognitive fog, and recovery — best used as part of a broader longevity plan, not a one-off.
What IV therapy will not do
- Cure a cold, flu, or COVID.
- Replace sleep, protein, strength training, or sunlight.
- "Detox" a healthy liver — that organ already does that job well.
- Meaningfully help someone who is already well-nourished and hydrated, if the protocol is not matched to a real goal.
- Substitute for hormone, thyroid, or metabolic care when those are the issue.
Who benefits most
- Adults recovering from illness, surgery, or a demanding travel schedule.
- Athletes and active people in heavy training blocks or altitude environments (very relevant in New Mexico).
- People with documented deficiencies that oral supplementation isn't fixing.
- Members inside a longevity or hormone optimization program who need targeted nutrient support between visits.
How Althera does IV therapy differently
The Althera Drip Lab is not a walk-in vitamin bar. Every drip is chosen by a licensed clinician, screened against your health history and medications, and documented in your chart. Protocols are built around clinical goals — recovery, immune support, hydration, cognitive performance, or peri-procedure support — not vibes. Members get priority scheduling and bundled pricing; non-members are welcome after a short intake.
