What Is Longevity Medicine? A Practical Guide

Longevity medicine is a proactive, data-driven branch of healthcare focused on extending healthspan — the number of years you live in vibrant, functional health — not just lifespan. Instead of waiting for disease to appear, longevity clinicians measure the biological drivers of aging early, correct them, and re-measure over time. At Althera, longevity medicine is delivered inside our concierge membership in Albuquerque so care is continuous, personal, and coordinated by a single clinician who knows your full picture.

Longevity medicine vs. traditional primary care

Traditional primary care is designed to catch disease once symptoms show up. That matters — but by the time a lab result crosses into the "disease" range, biology has usually been drifting for years. Longevity medicine looks at the same person with a wider lens and a longer timeline.

    • Focus. Traditional care treats what is broken. Longevity care optimizes what is trending in the wrong direction — long before it breaks.
    • Time. A traditional visit is 10–15 minutes. A longevity visit at Althera is unrushed, with time to review data, ask nuanced questions, and build a plan.
    • Data. Longevity care uses advanced labs (hormones, metabolic markers, inflammation, cardiovascular risk beyond standard cholesterol), body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness, and movement analysis — not just an annual physical.
    • Prevention. The unit of care is a decade, not a visit. Interventions are chosen because of what they compound into at year 5, 10, 20.

The pillars of a longevity plan

Every longevity plan we build at Althera weaves together the same core levers. They are boring in isolation and powerful when stacked and measured.

    1. Metabolic health. Fasting insulin, HbA1c, ApoB, triglycerides, continuous glucose data when helpful. Metabolic dysfunction is the shared root of most chronic disease.
    2. Hormone optimization. Testosterone, estradiol, progesterone, thyroid, DHEA, cortisol. Hormones drive energy, sleep, mood, body composition, libido and recovery — and they change with age. Learn more on our hormone optimization page.
    3. Body composition & strength. InBody scans, resting metabolic rate, VO2 / cardiorespiratory fitness, and grip strength.
    4. Cardiovascular risk. Advanced lipid panels, ApoB, Lp(a), inflammatory markers, blood pressure trends, and imaging when indicated.
    5. Sleep, stress & cognition. Sleep architecture, HRV, stress physiology, and simple cognitive screens tracked over time.
    6. Nutrition & movement. A protein-forward, real-food pattern matched to your labs, plus strength, zone-2 aerobic work, and mobility.
    7. Targeted therapies. Where clinically appropriate — peptides, IV nutrient therapy, regenerative injections, and recovery technologies.

    Who longevity medicine is for

    • Adults in their 30s–60s who feel "fine" but want to stay ahead of decline.
    • People with a family history of heart disease, diabetes, dementia, or cancer.
    • Women navigating perimenopause and menopause, and men noticing energy, sleep, libido or body composition changes.
    • High performers — clinicians, founders, athletes, parents — who cannot afford to lose a year to preventable illness.

What a longevity workup at Althera looks like

    1. Discover. A 15-minute discovery visit, followed by a full history, goals, and a comprehensive lab panel tailored to you.
    2. Measure. Body composition (InBody), resting metabolic rate, cardiorespiratory fitness, movement screening (Kinotek), and any imaging your risk profile calls for.
    3. Optimize. A written plan — labs, targeted therapies, nutrition, training, sleep and recovery — reviewed with your clinician, not handed off.
    4. Re-measure. We re-test what matters at 90 days and adjust.

    Ready to start?

The best time to start a longevity plan is the decade before you feel like you need one. A complimentary 15-minute discovery visit is the easiest first step.
